Welcome to year 5/6

5/6S Mrs Smith- Class Teacher

Mrs Fisher– Teaching Assistant

It is great to welcome your children into Year 5/6 especially as they all look so smart in their new uniforms. We are excited about the year ahead and are looking forward to introducing the new Year 5 Curriculum. The promotion of independent learning will be a focus for the children this year in preparation for year six.

Class Information:

Attendance and punctuality

It is important that your child has good attendance with the government requirements being 98%. It is also important that your child arrives on time as this minimises disruption in the classroom.

Please ensure they come to school, on time, everyday

PE Kits

Your child will participate in PE on a Wednesday. Please ensure they have the full kit, labelled for ease of identification. Please check pump sizes regularly as you know how fast they grow. As the day is subject to change or there may be additional opportunities for sports, children can leave their kits in school and take them home at half term, unless they need washing sooner.

Homework

Your child will receive homework when appropriate, this is to be completed and handed in within the same week. Homework could also be set online for children who have access to a laptop or tablet. We may use Purple Mash for this purpose. We will let you know which spellings your children will need to learn throughout this year. They will have a list of the spellings for each half term. Children also need to know the multiplication tables and will be tested on these regularly. Please ensure your child practises the tables at home

Reading

It is essential that your child reads at home as this will not only help with fluency but will also aid spelling. Please encourage your child to read for at least 10 – 15 minutes per night.

Swimming

Year 5 will have a block of swimming for 2 weeks in the Autumn term.
