Spring Term 2020

Welcome to the Year 6 class page!

Year 6 is an important and challenging year as not only will your child sit their SATs in May 2020 but it is also their last year at St Marie’s before starting secondary school. We have many exciting events planned for the year ahead which we hope will promote opportunities for children to develop their skills in resilience, communication and independence in order to help them with their transition to secondary school.

Attendance and punctuality

The year 6 curriculum is highly demanding and missing school regularly will have a detrimental effect on your child’s learning. Please make sure that your child is in school on time and attends every day.

You can find detailed information for topics and areas of study for the Spring term on the Spring plan below. This will be updated each term to ensure you are kept informed of what we are learning.

Spellings are tested each week and are linked to the Year 5/6 spelling word list. You child will receive their spellings every Monday and will be tested each Friday. Opportunities are planned throughout the week for your child to learn their spellings in school, however please encourage them to read over and practise their spellings at home too.

Reading is an integral part of the Year 6 curriculum. It is vital that your child is reading each day in order to keep up with the demands of the curriculum in school. Please encourage your child to read a range of non-fiction and fictional texts at home to support their daily reading in school. To inspire their reading, there is a list below of 100 suggested books which are suited to Year 6 pupils. Many of these books can be borrowed from school for your child to read.

P.E is an important part of the curriculum at St Marie’s. In year 6 we have P.E on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school to allow them to fully participate in their P.E lessons. P.E kit consists of a white top, black/navy blue shorts and black pumps.

This year we have changed our system for homework. There is a homework menu on this page with activities which children can choose to complete during Spring term. Our homework celebration date is Friday 3rd April.
