Design Technology

At St Marie's we recognise that children are living in a highly developed technological world. Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorus and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevent problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others needs, wants and values. They aquire a broad range of subject knowledge and how to draw upon disciplines auch as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well being of the nation. Our vision is that through the teaching of design and technology, our children will learn how to:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evalualte and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the pronciples of  nutrition and learn how to cook.
  • Use spercific topic related vocabulary in their discussions.

From EYFS up to KS2 our pupils are given opportunities to develop a wealth of knowledge, skills and concepts in order for them to express their own ideas and imagination. By buliding on knowledge of the curriculum from previous years our children will gain a secure, well rounded understanding of design and technology. This will ensure they are ready for the curriculum at KS3 and for life as an adult in the future.
